What PRICE could Liverpool put on greatness?

Football FanCast reporter Juan Vasquez wonders what price you could put on a striker like Fernando Torres.

There are few times within football where you just have to sit back and accept that you are in the presence of a true footballing great. Arsenal had it with Henry, Man United had it with Cantona and now Liverpool fans now share that feeling with Fernando Torres.

The Spaniard has been an absolute sensation since his arrival from Athletico Madrid and certainly silenced this particular doubter. I was always appreciative of the player's talents watching him week in, week out in la Liga, but couldn't accept that he would make the transition to English football. It was a bold move by Rafa Benitez in truth, given the previous failings of Fernando Morientes and it was the aforementioned woeful time in England that gave me reservations about Torres and his ability to adapt to the Premier League.

Morientes was a fantastic striker for Real Madrid, but he played in a style which is very much the archetypal English centre forward of old. Big, strong in the air and useful on the deck, we all felt that if one Spanish player was going to cross the divide and be a success in England then it was Morientes; it didn't happen and we kind of were resign to the fact that the cultures of our game was far too different.

Fernando Torres has certainly dispelled that myth and put us all too shame. While his transfer to England produced a shake of the head in our homeland, it didn't take us long to realise a divide had been crossed. After a shaky start, which saw Torres hitting the deck far too easily, El Nino finally started to take care of himself on the pitch and use his own strength to give out what he is receiving. It didn't take long and with that in place, Torres own footballing skills, abilities and finishing could shine to the forefront.

I don't know where Torres rates among the great Liverpool players of all time, but I wouldn't mind guessing that he is high on the list. He looks so comfortable in the English game, more than he did in la Liga and he looks like a man against boys when he plays. A lot has been written about Liverpool this season and their chances for a title success and you have to concede that with Torres upfront they have every opportunity. It is widely reported in Spain that Man City are looking to do anything possible they can to get their hands on the Spaniard come January and are likely to offer vast fortunes to player and club in order to get their man. They say in England that every footballer has his price, but surely that doesn't apply to someone like Fernando Torres.

Where does Torres rank among Liverpool's great strikers?
