Rafa: We Can Cope Without Torres

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez has insisted his squad has enough strength in depth to cope with the loss of the injured Fernando Torres.

The Spanish striker suffered a hamstring injury playing for his country in midweek and looks set to miss the Reds’ next three games against Wigan, Atletico Madrid and Chelsea.

The injury comes at a bad time for the striker who, after a slow start to the season, appeared to have regained top form, scoring four goals in his last three games.

However, speaking in The Sun, Benitez claimed his side were strong enough to cope without Torres, but admitted that this hadn’t always been the case.

“In the past, maybe we just did not have the same quality,” claimed the Liverpool manager, “Yet now we have and that gives me confidence we will have enough of it, too.”

The Reds face Wigan Athletic at Anfield today and Benitez pointed to their recent victory over Manchester United, achieved without Torres and with little involvement from Steven Gerrard also, as an indicator that his side had progressed and could cope without their inspirational frontman.

“You look at positives and a big one for us was beating United without those two,” explained the Spaniard, “After that game, you could see how much more confidence the players had.”

Liverpool strengthened their squad in the summer bringing in players such as Robbie Keane and Albert Riera and their manager clearly believes the extra depth to his squad will bring its rewards.

“Sometimes you can have good players but not a good team. But I believe we have both. You just have to be ready for when you are needed,” said Benitez before concluding, “I have a lot of faith and belief in the others in my squad.”
